The space experiment VARIANT was realized onboard the Ukrainian remote sensing satellite SICH-1M launched on 24 December 2004. The main scientific task of the experiment was to study electromagnetic and current disturbances in the ionospheric plasma. The space experiment VARIANT is the first international project in the area of fundamental space researches realized onboard a Ukrainian satellite and supported by the National Space Agency of Ukraine. The main results obtained in the experiment VARIANT are discussed. The composition of scientific payload operated in space is described and some preliminary processing results of the onboard measurements are illustrated.
