The use of magnetic navigation system of the microsatellite for geomagnetic field measurements

Magnetic orientation systems are used more and more commonly for the navigation and orientation of artificial Earth satellites. In such systems, satisfactory navigation quality can be reached with the use of the sole measuring instrument, namely, magnetometer, while the attitude control is performed with three orthogonally spaced electromagnets. We describe the onboard LEMI-016 magnetometer which has been successfully operating since 17 April 2007 as a part of the orientation system of the Earth remote sensing microsatellite Egyptsat. The data obtained during the flight and onboard experiments confirm a high level of the navigation and orientation system operation and the magnetometer good quality.
