Abstract:
Th e article highlights the history of the preparation and implementation of the large-scale, complex experiment ARAKS, conducted
in 1974—1975 and aimed at reproducing and studying geophysical phenomena, particularly the aurora borealis. Th e
signifi cance of international scientifi c cooperation between France and the USSR for research into near-Earth space during the
«Cold War» is considered.
Th e project’s technical concept, which sought to create an artifi cial aurora borealis by injecting electron beams into the
ionosphere from the Kerguelen Archipelago (Southern Hemisphere) toward a magnetically conjugate point near the village of
Sogra (Northern Hemisphere), is described in detail.
Special attention is given to the contributions of Ukrainian scientists, particularly those from the E. O. Paton Electric Welding
Institute and the Institute of Electrodynamics, both part of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR, who developed
and operated unique onboard electron accelerators and other scientifi c equipment. Th e equipment’s characteristics, the chronology
of expeditionary work, and a description of the course of rocket launches are provided.
Th e article analyzes the scientifi c results of the experiment, which confi rmed the possibility of controlled infl uence on the
ionosphere, detailed the structure of the Earth’s magnetic fi eld, and laid the foundation for further development in space instrument
making, the study of space weather, and the physics of magnetospheric-ionospheric connections.
Keywords: artifi cial aurora borealis, climatology, E. O. Paton Institute of Electric Welding, geophysics, history of science and technology, Institute of Electrodynamics, international scientifi c cooperation, meteorology, rocket and space science and engineering, space instrument making
