The infl uence of gravity was analyzed, and the morphological and functional responses of three moss species with diff erent
gravisensitivity — Ceratodon purpureus (Hedw.) Brid., Physcomitrium patens (Hedw.) Mitt., Ptychostomum imbricatulum
(Mhll. Hal.) Holyoak & N. Pedersen were determined depending on the phosphorus content (Pi) in the substrate. Phosphates
(Pi) are important components in the initiation of gravitropism: low Pi content reduces the gravisensitivity of protonemata
and growth reversion aft er clinorotation. At the same time, low Pi concentrations lead to morphological modifi cations, including
stimulation of branching, an increase in moss turf density and size within the upper 0.2 cm layer of the substrate. It
was determined that a 25 μM Pi concentration is the minimum test level used to substantiate the eff ect of gravistimulation on
phosphate activity.
Based on the variability of the values of gravitropic angles of the lateral protonemal branches depending on phosphate
content, fi ve angle classes ranging from 0 to 90° were distinguished, with a dominant group of angles at 42...57°. A signifi cant
eff ect of phosphates on the bending angle (gravisensitivity) of C. purpureus and P. imbricatulum was observed, whereas the
eff ect on P. patens was insignifi cant.
The eff ect of low phosphorus concentrations on the angle group 74...89° of P. patens branches, which grow almost parallel
to the surface substrate, enhances plagiotropic growth. Plagiotropism in the turf structure of P. patens with perennial protonemata
enables an increase in turf area within the upper substrate layer and expands access to nutrients from other locations.
This indicates the species-specifi c features in growth correction of mosses under Pi defi ciency and the effi ciency of gravisensitivity
in determining branch angle variation.
Morphological modifi cations and dynamic changes in the gravitropic sensitivity of mosses under the infl uence of Pi are
accompanied by physiological responses as a necessary condition for growth activity. Under phosphorus defi ciency, intracellular
phosphatase activity in protonemal turfs increased, serving as a general indicator of metabolic status, and the stimulatory
eff ect of phytohormones on phosphate metabolism was enhanced. It was determined that species-specifi c features of gravisensitivity
in C. purpureus and P. patens may act as mediators of physiological processes during phosphate defi ciency and altered
gravity. The variation in phosphatase activity is attributed to the ontogenetic characteristics of gametophyte developmental
stages and the ecological association of mosses with specifi c substrates.
